Document assembly software, platforms and snake oilMany document assembly sales persons will be quick to show you an array of brilliant features, powerful development tools and intuitive languages that will lead you to believe you can "whip up" entire document assembly systems in just hours, or perhaps a day. This is exactly what many sales staff would love you to believe; that Rome was built in a day and furthermore, that you can do it too! This is of course, total bollox. As with most programming languages, the more it is capable of doing, the longer it takes to master it; simply because there is more to learn. Conversely, the easier a programming language is to learn, the less it generally offers, as it doesn't have as many features - that is why it was easy to learn. Beware of document assembly products that promise the ability for "anyone" to build and maintain their templates without any programming knowledge. For this to be true, the system must run on wizards and paragraph/clause selection mechanisms, rather than a logical thought building process, which is how legal documents are created. Products that operate on this basis are usually inherently limited in the quality of system that can be built with them. The purpose of this page is to succinctly and impartially list the power and penalties associated with some of the more common document assembly software platforms available today.
